How to choose a sofa

Grey sofa in a bright living room

A sofa is the centre of the living room and often the main place to sleep. A wrong choice costs you not a couple of uncomfortable evenings but years: you cannot reupholster a sofa in a day, and low-density filling will not regain its shape. For a sofa to last, consider five things: type and size, mechanism, fabric, filling and manufacturer. We go through each one using furniture from the MeBelle factory as examples.

Step-by-step guide

5 steps to choosing a sofa: type, mechanism, fabric, filling and frame, ordering from the manufacturer
  1. Choose the sofa type for your space. A straight sofa suits any living room, from 144 cm in the most compact models. A corner sofa gives more sleeping space and almost always has a storage compartment for bedding — the best option for a family, but measure the diagonal of the passage: it is carried in diagonally, not straight. For a child's room or a compact room, a small straight sofa or an armchair bed will do.
  2. Choose the folding mechanism. For everyday sleeping, choose a “Eurobook” or a “Dolphin” — both give a flat sleeping area without joints and withstand daily unfolding for years. The “click-clack” and the classic fold-out sofa are designed for occasional use (a guest room, once a week) — under daily load the mechanism wears out faster. Check the exact size of the sleeping area: it should match your mattress, not “the sofa looks big enough”.
  3. Match the fabric to the wear it will get. For a family with children or pets, choose hard-wearing fabrics with water-repellent and anti-claw treatment: basket-weave fabric (rogozhka), velour, faux suede. Light velvet and linen fabrics look beautiful in photos but need careful upkeep. MeBelle offers Eco, Standard and Premium collections — from budget-friendly hard-wearing fabrics to the most durable ones.
  4. Check the filling and the frame. Comfort and service life depend on what is inside: multi-layer polyurethane foam of varying density in the seats keeps its shape longer than a single solid block, and a frame of solid wood and moisture-resistant melamine-faced chipboard does not work loose within a couple of years. This is what separates a sofa that lasts 10+ years from one that lasts a season or two — and exactly what you cannot judge from a photo in a listing.
  5. Order from the manufacturer, not a reseller. Ordering directly from the factory lets you adjust the size, fabric and mechanism to your needs and get the warranty from the manufacturer rather than from a middleman. MeBelle is a full-cycle factory: 24-month warranty, free storage of your order at our warehouse for up to 6 months, delivery across Ukraine.

Common mistakes when choosing a sofa

  1. Choosing a sofa by eye, without measuring doors and passages. A corner sofa is carried in diagonally through the room or stairwell — it is this measurement, not the door width, that most often becomes the obstacle. Before ordering, measure the delivery route using our guide “How to measure for furniture”.
  2. Confusing the overall width of the sofa with the width of the sleeping area. A sofa 220 cm wide does not mean a 220 cm sleeping area — with the armrests and the mechanism, the usable sleeping width is usually 20–40 cm less. If you are buying a sofa specifically for sleeping, check the sleeping area size separately.
  3. Not checking the type and density of the filling. Sellers rarely mention foam density, yet the difference shows within a year: soft low-density filling sags and loses its shape, while multi-layer medium- and high-density polyurethane foam keeps the seat firm for years.
  4. Buying a light fabric without protective treatment when you have children or pets. Light velour or linen looks striking in photos, but without water-repellent and anti-claw treatment the very first stain or claw scratch stays for good. For active everyday use at home, durability matters more than colour.
  5. Choosing a mechanism without considering how often it will be used. The “click-clack” is a compromise for a guest sofa, not for everyday sleeping: its moving parts are designed for less frequent use and work loose faster when used daily. For sleeping every night, choose a “Eurobook” or a “Dolphin”.

Frequently asked questions about choosing a sofa

Which sofa is best for everyday sleeping?

For everyday sleeping, choose a sofa with a “Eurobook” or “Dolphin” mechanism — they give a flat sleeping area without joints, with a sturdy frame and good-quality filling. Pay attention to the exact size of the sleeping area and the density of the polyurethane foam.

Which sofa suits a small living room?

For a small room, a compact straight sofa (from 144 cm in our models) or a small corner sofa with a storage compartment will work. At the MeBelle factory you can order a sofa to the exact dimensions of your space.

Which sofa fabric is the most practical if you have children or pets?

The most practical are dense, hard-wearing fabrics: basket-weave fabric (rogozhka), velour with anti-claw treatment and faux suede. They are easy to clean and keep their look for a long time. At MeBelle, these fabrics are available in the Standard and Premium collections.

What is the difference between polyurethane foam and a spring unit?

Multi-layer polyurethane foam distributes the load evenly and does not dip at individual points, whereas a spring unit may start to creak or feel uneven over time. In modern sofas, good-quality foam fully replaces springs — this is the approach MeBelle uses in all its models.

How long does a sofa last before it needs replacing?

With good-quality polyurethane foam, a solid wood frame and hard-wearing fabric, a sofa lasts 10–15 years without losing its shape. Its life is shorter if you choose low-density filling or fabric without protective treatment and use the sofa actively every day.

How long does it take to make a made-to-order sofa?

Production takes 14–21 days; for custom sizes it may take longer, and our manager will confirm the lead time before payment. Delivery across Ukraine by Nova Poshta or partner carriers, to your door. If it is not convenient to take delivery now, we store your order at our warehouse for up to 6 months free of charge.

In short

  • Type — straight for any living room, corner for a family (check the diagonal of the passage).
  • Mechanism — “Eurobook”/“Dolphin” for everyday sleeping, “click-clack” for a guest sofa.
  • Fabric — hard-wearing, with protective treatment, if you have children or pets.
  • Filling and frame — multi-layer polyurethane foam and solid wood last longer than budget alternatives.
  • Manufacturer — ordering from the factory gives you a warranty and the option to adjust the size to your needs.
  • Leaning towards a corner sofa? It has its own rules on the corner side and the passage diagonal: “How to choose a corner sofa”.
  • Not sure about the size? Use our guide “How to measure for furniture”.
