The mattress feels uncomfortable, and the first thought is to buy a new one. Often that is unnecessary: a mattress topper costs many times less and solves the same problem.
But only if it is the right problem. Let's look at when a topper works and when you will simply waste your money.
What a mattress topper is
It is a thin mattress laid on top of the main one. Not instead of it, but on top. It is 5–8 cm thick, compared with 20 cm for a full mattress.
It has no spring unit of its own, and this is fundamental: a topper doesn't support the body; the mattress underneath does that. A topper only changes how the surface feels.
Our model is the MeBelle ECO topper: dense foam plus coconut coir, a jacquard cover, reversible with medium firmness on both sides, up to 100 kg per sleeping place.

When a topper really helps
The mattress is too soft. The most common case where it works. The coconut coir in the topper adds firmness, and the surface stops sagging under your lower back. This is exactly what people buy a topper for.
The mattress is new but too firm. A soft topper works here, but our ECO isn't suitable for this: it is medium firm with coconut. Ask the manager about a soft model for this purpose.
A sofa is used for everyday sleeping. The seam or joint between sections is felt in your back every night. A topper evens out the surface, and this is probably the most underrated scenario. On choosing the sofa itself for sleeping: a sofa for everyday sleeping.
Two people with different preferences. One mattress for two, but different backs. A topper on half of the bed is a compromise that works better than you'd think.
A new mattress needs protecting. A topper with a removable cover takes the sweat, stains and wear. Washing a topper is cheaper than cleaning a mattress, and replacing one is many times cheaper.
When a topper won't help
It is important to be direct here, because this is where people lose money.
The mattress has sagged. If there is a dip in the middle, the topper will follow it. It doesn't level the base; it lies on it. A sagging mattress needs replacing.
You can feel the springs through the surface. This means the layer above the unit has worn out. A topper will dull the feeling for a few months, and then it will all come back.
The mattress is more than 8–10 years old. Here the question is no longer comfort but hygiene and the spring unit losing its resilience. A topper doesn't fix that.
Your back hurts. A topper changes the surface, not the support. If the mattress doesn't support your spine, a thin layer on top won't correct it: you need a different mattress or a doctor's advice, not a purchase.

A simple rule
A topper changes how the surface feels. A mattress supports the body.
If your complaint is about the surface ("too hard", "slippery", "I can feel the seam"), a topper works. If it is about support ("I sink in", "I wake up in pain", "there's a dip in the middle"), it doesn't.

Practical details
Get the size to match the mattress exactly. Not "roughly": a smaller topper slides and bunches up; a larger one folds over at the edges, and you can feel it.
Fastening. Corner straps or a non-slip base are essential, otherwise the topper will wander during the night.
Bedding one size up. A topper adds 5–8 cm of height, and a standard fitted sheet may no longer stretch over it.
Reversible doesn't mean dual-firmness. Our ECO is reversible, but the firmness is the same on both sides, medium. You turn it not to change the feel but for even wear, once every three months.
What it costs compared with a new mattress
This is the whole point: a topper costs noticeably less than a mattress, so it is good value as a test.
If you are unsure whether you need a firmer mattress, buy a topper with coconut and sleep on it for a month. It is the cheapest way to find out, and the topper stays useful either way: in the guest room, on the sofa, on a trip.
What to consider before buying
- Load. The ECO takes up to 100 kg per sleeping place, whereas our mattresses take 120–130 kg. Compare.
- Warranty: 24 months.
- Coconut gets firmer in the cold. If the bedroom is cool, the difference is noticeable; in a heated room it isn't.
On choosing the mattress itself: how to choose a mattress by firmness.
In brief
- A topper changes the surface, a mattress supports the body: sort your complaint by this
- It works for: a mattress that is too soft, a sofa for everyday sleeping, protecting a new mattress
- It doesn't work for: a sagging mattress, springs you can feel, age over 8–10 years
- Size exactly to the mattress, fastening is a must, bedding one size up
- As a cheap test before buying a firmer mattress, it always pays off
