How to choose a corner sofa

CLASSY corner sofa in a bright living room

A corner sofa anchors the living room and often serves as the main place to sleep — so a mistake in the corner side or size shows every day, not just at the moment of purchase. Consider five things: the corner side, the size for the room, the sleeping mechanism, the fabric and the manufacturer. We go through each one using furniture from the MeBelle factory as examples.

Step-by-step guide

How to tell the corner side: left corner L, right corner R
  1. Measure the space and choose the corner side. A corner sofa is tied to a wall, so the side of the corner matters — left or right. It is easy to work out: stand facing the sofa — if the projecting part (the corner) is on the left, it is a left-hand sofa (L); if it is on the right, a right-hand sofa (R). At MeBelle, you order the corner on the side you need, to the exact dimensions of your living room.
  2. Decide on the size: compact or modular. For a compact living room, choose a corner sofa whose longer side is no more than 2.5 m, and leave a walkway of at least 60–70 cm in front of the seat to the coffee table or wall. For a spacious room, a modular sofa is the better choice — you can buy more sections later or rearrange the configuration if the room or your needs change.
  3. Choose a mechanism for everyday sleeping. For sleeping every night, a “Dolphin” or a “Eurobook” with a flat, wide sleeping area without joints will do. With the “Dolphin”, the lower section slides forward and unfolds — check that there is free space in front of the sofa in exactly the direction it pulls out, otherwise unfolding it every evening will be awkward.
  4. Match the fabric to the wear it will get. A corner sofa is the family's main place to relax, so choose hard-wearing fabrics with water-repellent and anti-claw treatment: basket-weave fabric (rogozhka), velour. MeBelle offers Eco, Standard and Premium collections for different budgets.
  5. Order from the manufacturer to fit your layout. At the factory, a corner sofa is made to your size, corner side, fabric and mechanism — rather than you fitting your layout around a ready-made model from the catalogue. MeBelle is a full-cycle factory: 24-month warranty, free storage of your order at our warehouse for up to 6 months, delivery across Ukraine.

Common mistakes when choosing a corner sofa

  1. Ordering the wrong corner side. This is the costliest mistake when choosing a corner sofa — the corner side cannot be changed once the sofa is made. Check the side twice: stand facing the sofa in the room exactly as it will actually stand, and only then decide whether it is left or right.
  2. Buying a fixed corner sofa when a modular one was the better choice. A compact corner sofa has a fixed configuration — you cannot extend or rearrange it. If there is a chance the room will change (a move, a new layout, a growing family), a modular sofa gives you the freedom to add a section or arrange it differently.
  3. Not checking the longer side against the doors and hallway. The long side of an assembled corner sofa often gets stuck at a door or a turn in the hallway during delivery. Check the route using our guide “How to measure for furniture” before ordering a specific size.
  4. Choosing a corner sofa that is too big for a compact living room. A sofa with a longer side over 2.5 m in a room of up to 15–18 m² eats up the whole walkway and makes the space cramped, however generous the sofa itself is. Aim for a 60–70 cm walkway in front of the seat — if there is none left, the sofa is too big.
  5. Not checking which way the “Dolphin” mechanism pulls out. With the “Dolphin”, the lower section slides forward by the full depth of the extra sleeping area. If a coffee table or wall in front of the sofa is closer than that, it will be physically impossible to unfold the sofa for the night without moving furniture every time.

Frequently asked questions about choosing a corner sofa

Left- or right-hand corner sofa — how do you tell?

Stand facing the sofa: if the projecting part (the corner) is on the left, it is a left-hand sofa; if it is on the right, a right-hand sofa. At MeBelle, the corner side is chosen to suit your room layout.

Which corner sofa is suitable for everyday sleeping?

Choose a “Dolphin” or “Eurobook” mechanism — they give a flat, wide sleeping area without joints, with a sturdy frame and orthopaedic filling. Also check that there is free space in front of the sofa to unfold it.

Compact or modular corner sofa — which to choose?

A compact one saves space and has a fixed configuration — it suits you if the room layout is final. A modular one lets you add sections and change the arrangement — the choice for a spacious living room or when changes are likely in the future.

How much space do you need in front of a corner sofa?

At least 60–70 cm of walkway to the coffee table or the opposite wall — enough to walk past and sit down without bumping into furniture. For a “Dolphin”, also allow space for the lower section to pull out.

Can I order a corner sofa in my own size?

Yes. MeBelle is a full-cycle factory, so a corner sofa is made to the exact dimensions of your room, with the corner side, fabric and folding mechanism you need.

How long does it take to make a made-to-order corner sofa?

Production takes 14–21 days; for custom sizes it may take longer, and our manager will confirm the lead time before payment. Delivery across Ukraine by Nova Poshta or partner carriers, to your door. If it is not convenient to take delivery now, we store your order at our warehouse for up to 6 months free of charge.
