A sofa for the living room: which size is right for you

A sofa for the living room: which size is right for you

The most common mistake when choosing a sofa is going only by how many people "need to fit" rather than by the actual size of the room. A sofa that's too big visually "eats up" the space and gets in the way, while one that's too small gets lost among the rest of the furniture. Let's look at how to choose a size that fits your living room just right.

Start by measuring the room, not counting seats

Before you look at the catalogue, get a tape measure. Measure not only the free floor area for the sofa but also the walkways around it. Between the sofa and the coffee table, and to the door or other walkways, it's worth leaving at least 60–80 cm — otherwise it will be awkward to move around the room.

If you're not sure how to measure up for furniture correctly, use our step-by-step guide "How to measure up".

Standard sizes of straight sofas

Most MeBelle straight sofas come in three basic widths:

  • 200 cm — a compact option for small living rooms and studio flats; seats two or three people comfortably.
  • 220 cm — the "happy medium": enough room for a family, without feeling bulky.
  • 280 cm — for spacious living rooms, where the sofa becomes the centre of the lounge area.

A difference of 20–30 cm looks insignificant on a drawing, but in a real room it has a big effect on the sense of space. You can see all the models and sizes in the Sofas section.

When a corner sofa is better

A corner sofa wins where capacity and zoning matter. Thanks to its shape, it gives more seats on the same floor area and naturally divides the room — for example, separating the lounge area from the dining area in an open-plan space.

If your living room is larger than 18 m² or open-plan, take a look at the Corner sofas section. For smaller rooms a compact corner sofa can also work well — it "gathers" the seats into the corner, freeing up the middle of the room.

A folding mechanism: do you need one

If the sofa is unfolded for sleeping from time to time, pay attention to the mechanism. For straight sofas the most common is the Eurobook — reliable and simple. For corner sofas, options such as the Dolphin are convenient, as they unfold without having to move the sofa away from the wall. Even if you don't plan to sleep on the sofa every day, a bedding compartment under the seat is a practical bonus.

Colour and texture affect the sense of space

Warm natural shades — cream, beige, muted green or terracotta — don't visually shrink a room as much as dark, saturated tones. For small living rooms it's better to go for a lighter palette and add character with textiles: cushions, a throw, curtains. We wrote in detail about choosing the fabric itself in the article "Types of upholstery fabric".
