How to choose the right bed for healthy sleep

How to choose the right bed for healthy sleep

A bed is furniture we spend a third of our lives with, so it's worth thinking the choice through in advance rather than going only by how it looks in the showroom. Comfortable sleep depends on a combination of four things: the right size, a reliable base, a good mattress and convenient storage. Let's go through each point.

4 components of healthy sleep: size to suit the room and the number of people, a base with slats and ventilation, a mattress with the right firmness and support, storage with a compartment if needed
4 components of healthy sleep — from size to storage

Sleeping area size

Choose a size with some margin — you can't change it after you've bought the bed:

  • 90×200 cm — single, for a kids' or teenager's room.
  • 140×200 cm — a comfortable minimum for one adult or a compact double.
  • 160×200 cm — the most popular double size.
  • 180×200 cm — for those who value space; ideal if the bedroom is big enough.

A difference of a few centimetres has a big effect on sleep quality. All available sizes are listed on each model's page in the Beds section.

The base: slats versus a solid base

The base matters as much as the mattress. Slats made of bent plywood provide natural shock absorption and extend the life of the mattress. A solid base suits only certain types of filling and ventilates the mattress less well. All else being equal, choose a slatted base.

Slats or a solid base: slats give shock absorption and ventilation, a solid base doesn't let the mattress breathe

A mattress for your body

Even the best bed won't give you comfortable sleep without the right mattress. Go by your weight, your favourite sleeping position and the firmness you prefer. At MeBelle you can choose a mattress for the bed straight away — see the models and fillings in the Mattresses section.

A lift-up mechanism for storage

If your flat is short of space for seasonal things, consider a bed with a lift-up mechanism — the space under the mattress becomes a proper storage compartment. The most convenient option is a gas lift, as on the MIND bed: a smooth, silent lift even with a heavy mattress. More about how it works in the article "A lift-up mechanism in a bed".

Finish and style

The headboard finish affects not only the look but also the care: fabric upholstery looks cosy but needs regular cleaning, while treated fabrics are easier to keep clean — especially if you have children or pets (more in the article "Types of upholstery fabric"). The height of the headboard, the shape of the legs and the colour should echo the rest of the bedroom interior.
