A lift-up mechanism turns the space under the mattress into a proper storage compartment — which is exactly why such beds are so popular for flats with limited space, where every spare metre counts.
How it works
Instead of a fixed platform, the frame is attached to the base with gas lifts or a spring mechanism, so the sleeping platform lifts at an angle together with the mattress, opening access to the compartment inside. When closed, the bed looks like an ordinary one — the mechanism is completely hidden and doesn't affect its appearance.

Gas lift versus springs
- A gas lift mechanism (as on the MIND bed) — a smooth, silent, effortless lift even with a heavy orthopaedic mattress. The most common and most convenient option.
- A spring mechanism — simpler in design, but takes more physical effort to lift.

What to look for when choosing
- Max. load of the mechanism — especially for large mattress sizes.
- The depth of the storage compartment.
- A stay that holds the raised platform open while you load things in.
We've collected these and other details in the general guide "How to choose the right bed".
A lift-up mechanism or pull-out drawers
The alternative to a storage compartment is a bed with pull-out drawers. Drawers are convenient because you don't need to lift the platform, but they use only part of the space under the bed and need free space at the side to pull them out. A lift-up mechanism opens up the whole area under the mattress, so in a small bedroom, where the bed stands right against the walls or bedside tables, it usually wins.

Who needs it most
This option is especially suitable for kids' and teenagers' rooms, studio flats and bedrooms without a separate walk-in wardrobe — the compartment under the bed easily replaces a chest of drawers or part of a wardrobe for seasonal things, bedding or suitcases. As a result, the room does without an extra piece of furniture — and that means free floor, more air and easier cleaning.
What to keep in the compartment, and what not to
- Ideal: bedding, duvets and pillows, seasonal clothes in covers, suitcases.
- Handy: rarely used things in containers — this makes it much easier to keep the compartment tidy.
- Not a good idea: damp things and unwrapped shoes — the compartment is less ventilated than open shelves, so everything you put inside should be dry and clean.

Every few months take things out and air the compartment — it's the simplest way to prevent a musty smell.
A few tips for a long-lasting mechanism
Raise and lower the platform smoothly, without jerking, don't leave it open for long unless you need to, and don't exceed the load the mechanism is designed for. Every few months check the fixings — joints that are tightened in good time work quietly and last longer.
In short
- A lift-up mechanism turns the space under the mattress into a large storage compartment.
- A gas lift raises the platform smoothly and effortlessly — it's the most convenient option.
- Before buying, check the max. load, the depth of the compartment and whether there's a stay.
- Keep only dry things in the compartment, ideally in containers or covers.
- Smooth lifting without jerking is the main rule for a long-lasting mechanism.
