A width of 120–140 cm is no longer a kids’ bed but the main piece of furniture in the room. It is where they sleep, sit with a laptop and have friends over.
When a kids’ bed becomes too small
The most reliable sign is that the child sleeps diagonally. It is put down to “tossing and turning”, but in fact the body is looking for width that is not there.
The second sign is less obvious: nobody sits on the bed during the day any more. A teenager spends much more time in their room, and a narrow bed is no good for sitting — so they simply do not use it.
Feet pressing against the footboard is the last sign: length runs out later than width.
120 or 140
120 cm — the optimum for a room from 12 m². A teenager lies with a laptop, sits with a friend, spreads things out. The bed really works as a sofa.
140 cm — the “for good” choice: after school the room will become a guest room or the child will stay in it as a student. This is already an adult sleeping area.
Take a length of 200 cm. For a second purchase this is essential: 190 cm will become too short at a height over 180, and nobody plans a third replacement.
How much space it takes
The calculation is simple: width plus 60 cm for each walkway. Against a wall, one walkway is not needed.
- 120 cm against the wall — 180 cm of room width
- 140 cm with two walkways — 260 cm
And count the desk separately: a teenager definitely needs one, and that is exactly what the fight for metres is about.
Frequently asked questions
- Isn’t a 140 cm bed too big for a teenager?
- If the room allows it — no. It is an adult sleeping area that will not need changing after school.
- Will a length of 190 cm be enough?
- For a height of up to 175 cm — yes. But for a second purchase it makes more sense to take 200 cm straight away: boys keep growing until 18–19.
- Can I take the same model in two sizes for two children?
- Yes. Most of our kids’ models come in six or seven sizes, so you can take 140 cm for the older child and 90 cm for the younger one — it will look like a set.
- Why an upholstered headboard?
- A teenager sits on the bed every day, and the headboard works as a backrest. A wooden one is not made for this — you have to put a pillow behind you.
